Sydney Opera House

Opéra | Cap. 5738p

The Sydney Opera House, in Sydney (New South Wales, Australia), is one of the most famous buildings of the 20th century and a major venue for the arts, particularly opera. Its original architecture, which resembles a sailboat to some and a shell to others, was designed by the Dane Jørn Utzon.

Located on Sydney Harbour, at Bennelong Point, it is surrounded by wooded parkland to the south and is adjacent to the famous single-arch Harbour Bridge. The resulting landscape has become a symbol of Australia and Sydney in particular. Today, the opera house is a major tourist attraction in the city, although most visitors do not have the opportunity to attend a performance.

Home to the Australian Opera, the Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Opera House also plays host to many touring foreign artistic productions. The Opera House is administered by the Opera House Trust, a body governed by the New South Wales Department of the Arts.
