Point d'intérêt | Heavy Metal, Power Metal

Ronnie James Dio, real name Ronald James Padavona, was an American heavy metal singer and songwriter who was born in Portsmouth on July 10, 1942, and died in Houston on May 16, 2010, at the age of 67. He was a member of the bands Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Heaven [&] Hell, as well as his own band, Dio. He was repeatedly cited as one of the leading singers of the heavy metal scene, famous for his powerful voice and for popularizing the “horns” gesture (with the hand), a defining element of metal culture.

Before his death, he had been collaborating with other Black Sabbath members - Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice - on the Heaven [&] Hell project, whose sole studio album, The Devil You Know, was released on April 28, 2009. On the morning of May 16, 2010, he succumbed to a six-month battle with stomach cancer.
