Dire Straits is a British rock band formed in Deptford (London borough of Lewisham) in the summer of 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead guitar and vocals), his brother David Knopfler (rhythm guitar), John Illsley (bass) and Pick Withers (drums). Considered one of the greatest rock bands of the 1980s, Dire Straits has sold over 140 million albums since its inception.
Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road, Brothers in Arms, Money for Nothing, Your Latest Trick, Private Investigations, Walk of Life, Calling Elvis, So Far Away, Lady Writer, Twisting by the Pool are some of the band's biggest hits.
The band broke up in 1993, although their contract did not officially end until 1995. Its members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
