Haus der Musik

Musée | Classical

Opened in 2000, the Vienna House of Music (Haus der Musik) is Austria's first museum dedicated to sound and music. Spread over 54,000 m², it offers an interactive, multimedia immersion in the world of music, exploring the evolution of instruments from their origins to contemporary rhythms.

This large-scale project is the fruit of a unique collaboration involving four Austrian universities, two international academic institutions, and a host of experts ranging from musicians and theorists to multimedia artists, sound engineers, architects and students. In recognition of its avant-garde approach, the Maison de la Musique was awarded the prestigious Austrian Museum Prize in 2002.

Nestled in the heart of Archduke Charles' palace, the former home of Otto Nicolai, founding father of the Vienna Philharmonic, the house is of historic significance. Zubin Mehta, the illustrious Indian conductor, holds the honorary presidency. In 2009, it ranked 19th among Vienna's most visited sites, attracting 205,000 visitors - living proof of its cultural appeal.
